IWC Medal Winner Tasting Shanghai
26 August 2010
M on the Bund, SHANGHAI
Overview
China's wine market is projected to grow by over 30% from 2009 levels by 2013 to around 1.3 billion bottles, while the number of Chinese consumers that can afford to buy imported wines could increase from 23 million to 80 million by 2025 (Wine Intelligence figures). Imported wines account for 12% of the total market, growing steadily by over a percentage point a year, with a remarkable 400% increase in wine imports since 2005. A younger, professional class of people is driving much of the overall growth in the major urban centres, with Shanghai becoming the pre-eminent centre for imported wine. Such consumers view wine as an aspirational drink, in keeping with their status and wealth, and are increasingly buying imported wines over domestically produced wines. China is currently the eighth largest wine consuming country in the world.
