Overview
Since the South Korean wine market opened to imports in 1987 it has shown some of the fastest growth in Asia. The original number of 12 importers has grown to 450. Following the introduction of direct retail sales for imported goods in 1995, sales have shown triple digit year-on-year growth reaching a high of US$100 million for wine shipments in 2008. Growth in wine imports dipped during the economic crisis but in 2010 the market is once again growing. On premise sales account for around 50% of all sales of imported wines. Off-trade sales are increasing as the big multiple retailers expand their wine offering. Wine has become fashionable and it the younger, affluent Koreans who are driving this growth with 90% of imported wine consumption centred on Seoul.
